The 2020 professional golf season is officially underway and Team KPMG is back in competitive tournament play this week, as PGA Tour professionals and KPMG Brand Ambassadors Phil Mickelson and Maverick McNealy begin their 2020 campaigns at “The American Express” in La Quinta, CA.
Mickelson enters the 2020 season coming off a solid campaign in 2019, which was highlighted by his 5th win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his 50th career victory as a professional and 44th on the PGA Tour. This year will be his 28th PGA Tour season, and Mickelson, who turns 50 this June, maintains that his motivation to play and win is just as strong as ever.
“The reason I’m still motivated is that I love what I do – I love playing golf and I love competing,” Mickelson said. “I love playing the PGA Tour and the challenge of beating many of the young guys that are coming up – it’s what drives me.”
McNealy is entering his rookie season on the PGA Tour after an impressive 2019 season, where he earned his way to the PGA Tour by finishing in the top-25 of the Korn Ferry Tour. Maverick is excited for what’s to come in his rookie campaign playing at the highest level.
“The PGA Tour is the goal for every professional golfer, and it’s validating to be here,” McNealy said. “I’ve worked hard for two years on the Korn Ferry Tour, and I’m excited to compete against the best players in the world, play the best golf courses in the world every single week, play in front of a lot of fans and try to move up the world ranking every single week.”
On the LPGA Tour, brand ambassadors Stacy Lewis and Mariah Stackhouse begin their 2020 seasons next week at the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio. Lewis, who gave birth to her daughter, Chesnee, in October of 2018, experienced her first year as a working mom on the LPGA Tour in 2019, and feels more comfortable in her new role heading into the 2020 season.
“I feel more prepared for having Chesnee and what life is going to be like on the road,” Lewis said. “She’s a little bit easier now to take care of, so I think 2020 is going to be a little easier off the golf course and I do feel better prepared going into this year than last year.”
Stackhouse enters her fourth professional season after improving every year over her past three campaigns. Mariah is focused on breaking through in 2020 and taking her game to the next level.
“What I’ve learned about myself [over the last three years on Tour] is that I’ve always believed myself to be a pretty positive person, but it hasn’t been easy, and it’s taken that positivity to keep me motivated and in a place of constant self-encouragement,” Stackhouse said. “I’m proud of myself for maintaining that positive attitude, always believing that the best is yet to come and continuing to work toward that. Every week, my goal is to be inside the top 20…to be in contention to win.”
