KPMG brand ambassador Leona Maguire has had a successful rookie campaign on the LPGA Tour, so much so that she has been named to Team Europe for the 2021 Solheim Cup. The 26-year-old native of Ireland has been working towards this moment all season.
"It's my rookie season. (The Solheim Cup) was a goal at the start of the year but it was a little bit off the radar and I just knew I had to keep playing well and tried not to focus on it too much and let my results take care of itself," Maguire said.
Her selection to Team Europe can certainly be justified by her results throughout the LPGA season. Maguire has carded two 2nd place finishes and six Top-10s on the year. Her current streak of seven consecutive Top-15 finishes has propelled her to 8th in the Race to CME Globe season standings and 4th in scoring average on the LPGA Tour. Perhaps more impressive is her -27 cumulative under par score in majors this year, which ranks 2nd on Tour.
After competing in the Olympics just one month ago, Maguire is still looking to inspire the next generation of Irish golfers. She will be the first Irish golfer to compete in the Solheim Cup.
"I'm really excited,” Maguire said. “It is something that I have looked forward to. I have played the PING Junior Solheim Cup in 2009 and 2011, it was an incredible thing to be part of the Junior side, so to be on the 'big’ team is something really special.
"I think it’s going to be great for Irish golf and to show the young girls coming up that it is possible to do things if you set your mind to it.”
Fellow KPMG brand ambassador Stacy Lewis will serve as an assistant captain for Team USA.
The Solheim Cup will be played from Tuesday, August 31st - Monday, September 6th at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Follow @KPMGGolf on Twitter for updates on Leona’s performance. Go Team KPMG!
