When the action begins at this week's LPGA Drive On Championship, all eyes will be on KPMG Ambassador Leona Maguire as she attempts to defend her title at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Gold Canyon, AZ.
Just last year, Maguire captured the first LPGA Tour victory of her young career at the 2022 LPGA Drive on Championship in Fort Myers, FL, becoming the first Irishwoman to claim victory in the LPGA Tour.
“It’s huge for Irish golf," Maguire said after her victory. "There was never an Irish player on the Tour, let alone a winner. Hopefully there are a lot of people watching at home with big smiles on their faces and little girls watching hoping that they one day can hole a (winning) putt like that, too.”
Her victory ignited a run which would see her finish in the top-15 ten times throughout the season. Not only did she carry that momentum throughout the entire 2022 season, which included a 2nd place finish CME Group Tour Championship, but she's also off to a hot start in 2023.
In the first three events of Maguire's 2023 season, she has finished T9, T6 and T20, respectively. She is playing some of the best golf of her career, ranking 12th in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. According to KPMG Performance Insights, Maguire ranks 8th in Strokes Gained - Around the Green, 11th in Strokes Gained Total, 12th in Strokes Gained - Tee to Green, and 16th in Strokes Gained - Approaching the Green.
Maguire won't be the only KPMG Ambassador in the field this week. Stacy Lewis and Yuka Saso will also be looking to gain some momentum in the early stages of the LPGA Tour season.
