This Week in KPMG Golf

Lewis and Maguire in Major action, FedEx Cup Playoffs begin for Mickelson and McNealy

It’s a big week for KPMG brand ambassadors Phil Mickelson, Stacy Lewis, Maverick McNealy, and Leona Maguire. The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs begin this week at The Northern Trust, while the AIG Women’s Open tees off on the LPGA Tour.

Stacy Lewis and Leona Maguire will be in action at the AIG Women’s Open in Carnoustie, Scotland. The tournament marks the fifth and final Major of the 2021 LPGA season. Lewis will be in search of her second Women’s Open victory and third Major championship, having won the Women’s Open at St. Andrews in 2013. She’s also had some recent success in Scotland, where she won the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open in 2020.

A strong performance this week could also help to solidify Lewis’s position on the U.S. Solheim team which will be finalized on Sunday. She is currently in 12th place in Solheim Cup points, with the top 7 automatically qualifying for the team. Two additional members of the team will be determined via Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, where Lewis currently ranks 57th. The captain of the team, Pat Hurst, will add the final three members to the team via captains picks.

Leona Maguire has been playing the best golf of her young career of late. In her last six tournaments, Maguire has finished T15, T6, T15, T15, 2, and T9. She will look to continue this strong momentum as she tries to capture her first victory on the LPGA Tour.

“I’m happy with how I battled the wind at the [Trust Golf Women’s] Scottish Open for a top-15 finish,” Maguire said. “Links golf is such a great test and conditions couldn’t have bee more different than Tokyo. I’m looking forward to the [AIG] Women’s Open at Carnoustie.”

On the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson and Maverick McNealy will look for strong starts to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. A win this week would mark the second of the year for Mickelson after his historic victory at the PGA Championship. For McNealy, a win would represent the first of his PGA Tour Career. He has had 11 Top-25 finishes this season.

The FedExCup Playoffs feature a progressive cut, with fields of 125 for this week’s The Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey, 70 for the BMW Championship (Caves Valley Golf Club, Owings Mills, Maryland) and 30 for the TOUR Championship (East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, Georgia), where the FedExCup Champion will be determined.
