The U.S. Women's Open is one of the toughest tests in golf, but this year, KPMG ambassador Stacy Lewis is hoping for a little home field advantage in her hometown of Houston.
Lewis, the two-time major champion, and the LPGA Tour will this week head to Houston for the 75th U.S. Women's Open at Champions Golf Club.
"I'm very excited to get to play at home, to get to sleep in my own bed. That's basically unheard of in our game," Lewis said. "Getting to play in my home state, playing on grass I'm used to playing on - just really looking forward to having the time at home."
It's one thing to have the comforts of home during a grueling week, but even more advantageous may be Stacy's familiarity with Champions Golf Club. Stacy is a member at Champions and knows the course inside and out.
"I've got a lot of experience on the golf course and feel like I know it really well," Lewis said. "I'll have to adjust to the different tees and the different December conditions. It's definitely going to feel like a major even though we're playing it at a different time of the year."
The tournament will be played at two of Champions' courses during the four-round tournament, The Jackrabbit and the Cypress Courses. Stacy knows that each course will play differently, and believes they will both prove to be quality tests of golf.
"The Jackrabbit is a little bit tighter off the tee with a few more angles, and you're going to need to play the angles into the greens which are a little smaller and trickier. The Cypress Course is big - huge greens, speed is going to have to be really good, and I'm guessing it's going to play really long. Two difficult golf courses that are in great shape for this time of year."
Stacy's best result at the U.S. Women's Open came back in 2014, when she finished runner-up to Michele Wie at Pinehurst. With one win already to her name this season, she looks to close out the campaign with a big finish, and there's no better place to do it than her home turf.
