Leona Maguire checks in from her home in Ireland, giving an update on what she's doing to keep her game sharp and some leisure activities that she's doing to pass the time while away from the LPGA Tour.
Hi everyone. Leona here. Just wanted to check in - hope everyone is doing well and staying safe during this uncertain time.
I was supposed to be in the middle of our west coast swing on the LPGA right now, but like every major sporting organization in the world, we’re on a break right now.
I’ve made the decision to stay at home here with my family in Ireland. I wasn’t expecting to be home for this long - I thought it would be just a two-week break after Australia, but I’m enjoying being at home here with my family, even if it is under these circumstances.
I’m making the most of my time here. All of the golf courses are unfortunately closed here in Ireland, but I’ve been putting a lot of work in on my short game.
I can putt inside. I can chip and hit balls in my back garden. One of the perks of living in the countryside here in Ireland is we have a field out the back of our house, so I can hit up to a 7-iron there and can do some swing work with my coach, Shane.
I can do some video messaging with him, so it’s really not all that different to when I’m out on Tour. I can send him videos and he can send feedback to me, and we’ve been working on a few things, doing some mirror work, getting some good work done in the gym.
I’m treating it a bit like a second off season, building up some strength and power, so that my body is in really good shape once we do eventually get started again.
When the season picks up, it’s going to be a lot of golf in a short amount of time, so I want to make sure I’m as healthy and strong as I can be so both my golf game is in really good shape and I don’t pick up any injuries along the way.
When I’m not practicing or in the gym, I like to spend some time reading, catching up on some podcasts and spending some quality time with my family. We’ve been taking out the card games and board games and things can get a little competitive around here, but it’s always good fun.
I have two golden retrievers too that I like to take on a walk, so it’s been nice spending some time with them which I don’t get to do as often as I would like.
We’ll all get through this together, as Team KPMG, even if we have to be a part for now. Stay safe everyone, and hopefully I’ll see you all soon.
